Bekah's teaching philosophy is to enrich and expand the minds of her students by offering them musical education and knowledge so that they can fill others' lives with the gift of music. She believes that music will positively change a human life by its powerful and complex sounds and rhythms. It can affect a human being in his/her practical, physical, social and emotional environments.
Bekah's goal is to make her students feel confident about themselves as musicians. Her goal is not to put undo pressure on a student to "win the ultimate prize." She believes that succeeding is trying your best at what you do and the process it takes to get to where you want. The students will discover their own process of learning. Bekah is there to guide, encourage and offer suggestions to each student.
Bekah likes for each student to work on music that he/she enjoys playing or singing. She will also require the student to learn pieces of her choosing. Her lessons can cover the following:
exercises to warm the muscles for further performing,
music theory,
sight-singing,
learning rhythms,
stage,
audition and competition preparation,
expanding repertoire and
improving versatility.
Bekah prefers teaching students who have an open mind about learning many different genres of music. Each student must complete a thirty-minute evaluation with Bekah to allow her and the student to get to know each other. They will discuss policies, rates, musical background and preference of lesson content. The parent may be present at the evaluation, but is discouraged from attending lessons unless special circumstances are needed. She finds that a student usually can better express his/herself when the parent is not present. Bekah will ask the parent to sit in on certain lessons to be informed of miscellaneous news, and practice and homework assignments.
Bekah teaches in a music studio within her home in Lakeside, Richmond, Virginia. This is in quick proximity by car to all major interstates and most areas of Richmond, Ashland, Midlothian, Chester and Mechanicsville. References will be provided if requested.
